One of the greenest things you can do with regards to the household chores is use less petrochemical based detergents, and more natural soap based products.  Soaps are the original Simple Green Cleaner.  They can be all natural and even organic cleaning products.  The Eco Friendly cleaner should have several types of soaps to hand;

• Soft soap or liquid soap, for use as a diluted all round general cleaning liquid.  For cars, floors and anything else you can think of.
• Bar soap for rubbing into stains prior to washing the laundry.
• Soap flakes as a pre-soak for dirty laundry and more.

Simple Green Cleaning with Natural Soap

The key to Green Cleaning with soap is not to use too much.  That’s how soap scum builds up and leaves you working even harder to remove your Simple Green Cleaning Product.

The cheapest green cleaner has to be ordinary bar soap.  From this you can make your own soft soap and soap flakes.  Simply grate your bar of vegetable based soap to produce soap flakes.  Boil these up in water and you create soft soap which can be diluted further as a general household cleaner.  It is even good as a windscreen wash on the car, since detergents (even mild ones such as dish-washing detergent) can corrode the varnish on your car’s paintwork.

Simple Green Cleaning Products don’t come any more basic than soap and water.  It is probably why we’ve neglected it as a green cleaner for so long.  It just seems so old-fashioned and basic that it can’t be any good -  surely.  In fact soap is pretty alkaline giving it anti-bacterial qualities (why do you think it’s so great for washing our hands to keep germs and virus’s at bay?).

Don’t forget too, that soap can be used outside too.  It isn’t just a green cleaner; it’s also a safe pesticide.  Great for dealing with insect pests and fungal problems on your garden plants, insecticidal soap is merely soap used as an insecticide.

Disinfectant cleaners are rarely Green or Environmentally Friendly.  This is because to ensure every microbe is destroyed they tend to contain pretty toxic substances such as ammonia and bleach.  The ultimate Simple Green Disinfectant is very different.  Admittedly it won’t be used in hospitals.  But unless your home is full of immuno-suppressed folks do you really need that kind of antibacterial cleaning?

The only thing about vinegar is that you must remember to buy the highest acidity you can, if you really want your Simple Green Cleaning Product to act as a disinfectant or anti-bacterial cleaner.  5% acidity is fine, and is what you will usually find.  You can use any type you like, but distilled malt is usually the most economical.  Again buy in bulk for the best savings on your Simple Green Cleaning Products.

This makes for one incredibly Safe Disinfectant, one you definitely won’t mind having in your home.  But, for all it being a true All Natural Cleaning Product it still works.  It has lots of uses.  This Simple Cleaner is not just an anti-bacterial cleaner it is also a multipurpose degreaser.   Able to cut through grease and soap scum it will even tackle limescale and can be used to keep your windows bright and smear free!  This definitely one of the most useful Simple Green Cleaning Products, not just a Green Disinfectant.

Green cleaning is all about not damaging eco-systems or other life on this little blue planet.  So the question is what place can antibacterial disinfectants have in a world promoting that we make cleaning Eco friendly?

Ordinarily I would suggest that most of us simply do not need to destroy every microbe or ‘germ’ in our homes.   After all, exposure to small quantities of such beings helps our immune system develop and protect us from the truly dangerous life-forms swimming through our environment.

But, there may be times when you really want to destroy all bacteria and then you’ll be running for the disinfectant no matter how much I urge you not too.  Maybe you’re caring for someone who really needs to avoid contact with all bacteria – someone with a weakened immune system, taking immuno-suppresents or undergoing chemotherapy.  Even if you’re one of the true green cleaners who never normally uses anything stronger than vinegar, there are times when I recognise you really will want a true disinfectant green or otherwise.

Again, I really do not think we should all use antibacterial disinfectants (green or otherwise) on a daily basis.  But, if circumstances call for such strong arm tactics make sure your disinfectant is a green one.  And, at all costs please avoid chlorine bleach!

Neat vinegar can be used as an antibacterial cleaner, but if you’re after complete destruction of all organisms reach for the Simple Green or Pure Green 24 range of disinfectants as they are completely biodegradable and non-toxic.

Personally I think antibacterial disinfectant is not Eco friendly cleaning.  But, then life is all about compromises.  If a disinfectant is warranted choose one which is water based, biodegradable and a concentrated formula.  Then use only as needed. Always ask yourself ‘Should I Use Green Cleaners?’, you know the answer, don’t you?

Most homes and families are healthier without using Antibacterial Disinfectant – green or not, so whenever possible opt for something altogether milder.  There are several ranges of oxygen bleach products which offer tough cleaning and disinfectant capabilities without harming the environment.  Indeed good old hydrogen peroxide is a particularly useful antibacterial cleaner, and cheap too.  Whilst products not marketed as cleaners cannot be labelled as disinfectants, you can make good use of vinegar and tea tree oil as natural and safe antibacterial  green cleaners.  If you are choosing a disinfectant make sure it is at the very least a greenish one.
